Cheap yet fun honeymoon getaways?

Monday, August 4th, 2008

This may seem a bit odd, but the best wedding present I received was tickets to Opening Day at Fenway Park. My wife and I are avid Red Sox fans and had never seen the opening day festivities before. Normally, for the first game of the season we have to try to get to a restaurant at lunch time to try to catch some of the action. Having tickets to the game also meant that the two of us would get to take a day out of work together, we never get to do that.

This year was extra special because we weren’t the only ones in the stadium with new rings, our beloved Sox were being given their 2007 World Championship rings! I will never forget the day that my new bride and I got to spend together in the beautiful April sun on the first base line.

I do not mean to seem ungrateful for all of the other wonderful gifts that we were given by our friends and family, but being at that game with her made us both feel so alive. I can’t say that I will always remember the silver picture frame or crystal that we received on our wedding day, but our trip to Boston we will never forget.

Thank You Notes for Business?

Monday, August 4th, 2008

When should you write a thank you note for business? Certainly after you receive a gift of hospitality - human kindness that goes beyond the normal business setting but when else? According to the Economic Times they suggest:

To the host/hostess after a dinner invitation When you receive gifts via courier or mail To the boss, after being entertained by him or her or after a promotion When you receive congratulatory notes When you receive referrals or recommendations for your business To a colleague, for any special help To volunteers for help for a project (charity, sports or networking event, industry forums) After a hospital stay, for sympathy letters or gifts or flowers

What’s the appropriate time between receiving a gift and sending a thank you note? Ideally, write a note of thanks within 48 hours, but up to a week is permissible. Having said that, it is never too late — even if a lot of time has lapsed, write one and apologise for the delay.

That sounds nice!

Gift Gratitude?

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Found this in a bit of national gift research:

When it comes to gratitude, according to the survey, over one-half of Americans do not expect a thank you for a gift. While women are more likely to anticipate a sign of appreciation, both men and women agree that an in-person thank you and a handwritten note are the most acceptable ways of expressing gratitude for a gift. Most also agree that a phone call is acceptable; however, when it comes to high-tech modes of communication such as e-mail and voicemail, agreement significantly drops. A faxed note is the least acceptable method of saying thank you.

“As times and technology change, it’s still the personal touches that are most meaningful,” added Spizman. “Make every gift count.”

What surprises me is the decided decline in satisfaction when a personal call is placed to provide a thank you for a gift. While a handwritten note is the ‘Rolls Royce’ of thank yous, one has to think that a phone call would suffice in today’s harried lifestyles. Heck if it were me, I’d be happy just getting an email - what about you?
